Cooking with kids is a life skill which will take them through the ages, so they can eat, but also nourish themselves.
This video and recipe for Vegetarian Rolls is a “per child” recipe. Your child can either cook them by themselves or alongside you making up a larger batch. Or of course in a school setting so every child has the opportunity to cook each step of the recipe and explore every ingredients.
The per child style recipes are how we run our cooking incursions too.
For the Vegetarian Rolls
What you will need is:
- 1/2 sheet of defrosted puff pastry
- 2 tbsp of cooked and drained lentils
- 1 tbsp of cooked and cooled sweet potato
- 1 tbsp of cooked and cooled zucchini
- 1 tsp of seeded mustard/ tomato paste/ tamari sauce
- egg wash optional
What you will do is:
- Mix the mustard, lentils and vegetables together in a bowl and mush them together with a fork.
- Place them in the middle of your puff pastry in a log like pile along the length of the puff.
- Wrap up the mixture with the puff
- Pinch down the ends with the side of the fork, and then make the divisions through out the roll.
- Prick the top to let out the steam.
- Cook the roll in a 200 degree Celsius oven for around 20 – 25 minutes with it being golden brown.
- Allow it to cool slightly and enjoy!
The video is designed for you to watch along and pause as you go so you can see what to do, as much as read what to do in the recipe above.
If you are interested in some more cooking with kids videos, we have a stash of them over here in our Cooking with Kids section of the website.
And if you would like an incursion at your preschool, childcare or school, get in touch and we can discuss what theme would work well for your children.
