Well this is exciting.
We have been cooking with kids since 2012, when we humbly began preschool cooking classes in Newcastle.
Fast forward a few years and we run cooking programs in person for children from 3 years of age, all the way through primary school, and even online, to various community and health groups.
Recently we were asked if we would consider opening a weekly community cooking class for children, here on the Central Coast. A very quick think and well yes. Let’s do it.
So here we are opening up EOI for a Central Coast Cooking Club for kids, here on Central Coast, in Kincumber.
When: Term 4 Tuesdays (22nd October through to 26th November)
Where: Kincumber Neighbourhood Centre
Time: 3:30pm to 4:30pm
Age: 5 to 12 years
Cost: $25 per child
Observing children in this space is truly incredible.
Some are like fish to water and dive straight in.
Some are tentative, they don’t want to touch the foods.
We always remind the children that they are the boss of their own creation. That they do not have to eat it if they do not want to, but we would love them to follow along in the process of creating it.
Normally this gets most children into the prep phase. Chopping and creating.
Not all children end up eating it, but most give it a crack.
All children are proud of themselves and many cannot believe they made the dish!
And some children go off and rewrite the recipe to take home to make for their families.
Cooking is powerful.
We know that what we eat affects our health. And we know that if we learn to cook, if children learn to cook, they have a greater chance of positively affecting their health as they grow.
Commonly Asked Questions:
What if my child has allergies?
When you book in, we will ask you for all your dietary requirements so we can modify the recipes to be inclusive of all children. If there is an anaphylaxis, we will NOT have that food present.
Do we have to come to all sessions?
The idea is that you sign up for the 6 week block. We are testing this concept out here on the Central Coast and therefore, this is the way that it would be in the future as well. Although let us know what your availability is, as it is a test market so to speak.
We also move through concepts to develop skills with the children.
What if my child is sick?
If your child is unwell, we would like to accommodate you as much as possible but unfortunately there are very real costs with running cooking programs. We will need a full 48 hours in advance to offer a full refund.
As this is a test market, we are unable to offer a “credit” as yet.
Can siblings come?
Of course. Although at this stage there is no sibling discount as we are in test market phase.
Will you be offering these classes elsewhere on the Central Coast?
We would love to. Cooking is such an important skill for children (and everyone). If there is somewhere you have in mind, please let us know.
How do we book?
Please email us at mandy@littlepeoplenutrition.com.au and we will send you a booking form and invoice.
